CATALOGUE 1 Bone. Found during excavations at Castle Acre, Norfolk in a context believed to be before 1175. Vertical arm with anthropomorphic terminal, slot for the balance arm, and round platform to accommodate the coin tray. CATALOGUE 2 Copper-alloy. Found during excavations at Netherne Manor House, Surrey in a context of 1250-72. Vertical arm only with ball ended finial, slot for the balance arm, and a rectangular platform with pronounced lip to accommodate the coin tray. Height - 7.5cm Balance arm missing - no weights available. If contemporary with context this would have been used for 22 grain penny of 1247-79. Published - Surrey Archaeological Collections.
